#HClassBlog - "I stayed in my pajamas all day during break!" - January 14, 2026

Introduction:

Hello everyone! The #HClassBlog returns for the sixth year. Each week, a different student will share the events of our class with readers -- our authentic audience. We use a writing framework organized around a Rose - where the Bloom represents what we enjoyed the most, the Bud represents what we are looking forward to (and will likely write about on our next blog) and the Thorn highlights any challenges from the previous week. This week, we will be writing the blog as a class
The Rose:

We decided that our Rose for the week was returning to school to see our friends again. We all had a fun and safe winter break, but it is nice to be back. We hope you had a terrific winter break too.
The Thorn:

The slushy, rainy January weather has arrived. That meant a few indoor recess periods. For some people, who hate the cold, these are a good things. However, most of us love to get outside to play.
Our field is shut down because of weather - boo.
The Bud:

Next week, a few brave students are presenting their Food Truck / Food Booth presentations. We learned about food cost (rates), discounts, mark-ups and taxes in math and we are applying them to products we would love to sell at a food booth or in a food truck. Many of us chose Hot Chocolate, but Maddox is presenting his Oreo Milkshake next week. We are looking forward to seeing the first presentations. Here's a sneak peek.
Literacy Learning:

Mr. Hodgkinson introduced us to the concept of the #OneWord. The #OneWord challenge encourages people to ditch New Year’s Resolutions in favour of picking a single word to guide their year. We are creating Graffiti Art with our #OneWord, as well as Social Media Banners, so that we can display them in the class as a reminder. People often get frustrated when they can not meet their resolutions. With a #OneWord, you can use it to help guide you toward success, even when you make mistakes or lose your focus in the middle of the year. We are also creating digital snow globes with short essays about our #OneWord choice -- you might hear more about that next week.
Health & Science:

In Health, we are learning about nutrition. The Grade 6 students are connecting this to their Science studies of the major organs and their purposes. We have been creating mini-books as study tools for the eventual quiz. So far, we have learned about calories, proteins, fats and carbohydrates. We’ll finish the book next week.
Next Week:

Deyaa will be writing the blog next week. Thanks for reading.
