#HClassBlog - The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street - January 28, 2026
Hello everyone! My name is Mohammed, and this week, I will be writing the blog for #HClass25. I am a Grade 6 student at Sir Arthur Currie and I enjoy swimming and food.
The Rose:
Last week we watched an episode of “The Twilight Zone” called “The Monsters are due on Maple Street”. This episode of the 1960s television series is about people getting suspicious and paranoid when electric devices and radios stop working after a meteor passes overhead. We connected it to our discussion of critical thinking and making decisions without all the information. We also compare it to a poem called “Witch Hunt” by Neil Peart. We had leftover chips from our class party, so we got to eat those too.
The Thorn:
Our fellow classmate Jana is moving. Her last day was Friday [That's sad].We wish her luck at her new school.
The Bud:
We are excited to see our 60s “WandaVison” slides. Each week, we look at a different decade and, secretly, four students share a slide with information and a YouTube video for a song from that decade. Last week, we heard songs from the 1950’s, including Elvis Presley’s “Hound Dog” and “I Walk The Line” from Johnny Cash. Good luck to those who are presenting. Here is an example of a slide for Johnny Cash's
1956 song "I Walk The Line"
Literacy Leanings:
We are learning about “themes” and examined a poem called “Mother To Son” by Langston Hughes. It uses metaphoric language that we have learned about and the theme is to “persevere, even when life gets tough” . Here it is.
Math Mentions:
As a Grade 6 student, I was part of a group who started doing some practice EQAO questions. Meanwhile, the Grade 7 students learned about simple interests. If you loan $5400 from the bank it will also give an interest rate. Each month it increases so if the interest is at the start at $130, it slowly goes up and up to around $230 in some time.
History Happenings:
We picked our partners and topic for our podcast. Lucky no one got left behind, everyone got a partner. My partner and I chose to podcast about "Life as an Indigenous Child before the arrival of European Settlers". The podcast will eventually be available on Spotify as a series called “Voices Of Our Past” Episodes coming soon!
Next week:
Bilal will be writing the blog next week. We wish Bilal luck.
