#HClassBlog - "Milking Bananas" - March 3, 2024

"Milking Bananas"

During lunch Irene was having banana flavored milk, then Mina said that you get banana milk by “milking bananas!” It was hilarious!

Introduction:

Hey! This is Yasmin writing the blog for #HClass24 this week. I enjoy singing, drawing and playing volleyball. I am an extrovert and love being around my friends and family.

That's me ... Yasmin.

The Rose:

This week we made catapults with our Kindergarten Buddies by using spoons, popsicle sticks and rubber bands. It was really fun!

My group, working with our Kinder Buddies.

I was so happy that the sun came out a little this week. It was still very cold and icy, but it was starting to warm up.

The Thorn:

There was not a Thorn, it was a pretty straightforward week.

The Bud:

Next week, on Monday we will be having a Ramadan assembly, so the whole school will get  to learn about this special month for Muslims. Next week will also be the last week before March Break and we are all looking forward to that!

Math Mentions:

We started learning about ratios in math. We watched a video called “Atlantean Dodgeball” to explain how we use the ratio of the two dodgeball teams and not the difference in order to compare how each team is doing.

In the video, the game was paused when one team had 500 players left in the game and the other had 480. One coach was panicking because there was a difference of 20. However, the ratio of 5 to 4.8 shows that the teams are still fairly evenly matched.
Later, near the end of the game, one team has 9 player and the other has only 2.  The difference is now less, 7 players, but the ratio of 9:2 must be considered. The Sea Urchin (Red) is much more likely to win -- see below.

We are also building cash registers using Scratch coding for our food trucks and also making our websites, logos and slogans. The cash register can record sales, determine tax and apply discounts automatically. We also got a chance to try some math using the Thinking Classroom strategy, working in groups in the front foyer.

History

We have finished all of the Black History Month presentations built from a set of short CBC podcasts called Profiles in Black Canadians. Check out the resource we built here.

Gym Glimpse:

We got to play Red Light, Green Light with Mr. Song in Gym class. It was super exciting.

Mr. Song teaches us a gym lesson.

Respect Assembly:

This week we had the respect assembly and we got to vote for who we think should be the winners this month, I was actually one of the winners.

Arya, Irene and I won the Kindness Award at
our School Character Assembly.

Next Week: We are taking a break until after March Break. See you soon.
