#HClassBlog - "I'm Coy Wire - Rise Up!" - January 20, 2025
Introduction:
Hello! This is Irene writing the blog for #HClass24 this week. I enjoy playing the cello and flute and I’m currently a performer in two orchestras and a band. I’m a strong extrovert, therefore, I love activities that include several people or peers and I’m energized after being with them.
The Rose:
This week’s rose can relate to every week, because we watch it every day. Regardless, I still wanted to mention the entertaining and resourceful, CNN 10 news program. It is, like it sounds, a ten minute news program geared toward kids our age.
Our class greatly enjoys watching it and learning about breaking, sometimes shocking, news. It also helps boost our vocabulary and is definitely a kid-friendly source. We think that we are fortunate to be able to watch it and it is a highly recommended news source! We are learning to evaluate our news sources and look for bias. We genuinely feel that most stories on CNN 10 are balanced and verifiable.
The Thorn:
Our Thorn of The Week was the freezing cold weather. Unfortunately, it was slippery and dangerously cold outside. The temperatures dropped below -15 degrees Celsius and the Thames Valley District Board felt we needed to stay indoors during recesses for safety.
The Bud:
Next week, we are starting to work on a Snowglobe Shapegram. It looks quite challenging but it will be fun. Also, next week, we get to know who will be acting in the play Lion King Jr. About 100 people auditioned for singing roles, including me It took a lot of courage for everyone to take this risk.
Math Mentions:
Mr. Hodgkinson has been teaching us about rates. We had several exit tickets and the most recent one was a great success. We’ve been working hard on this unit and we are looking forward to our next unit. Here is the type of question we are learning to answer. Can you solve it?
Literacy: We are continuing to read the novel, Two Degrees. We have got to the point where some of us are starting to spot the possible connections for the characters in each of the three stories. It’s an engaging book and I’m already zoned into it. The parts that Mr. Hodgkinson leaves off in the book often have an extreme cliffhanger which makes us excited to hear the next chapter.
We’ve also started a fun project called WandaVision. It’s where each of us is secretly assigned a decade from the 1950s-2010s. We pick a song from that decade and create a Google slide that includes facts and the video for the song for the class to listen to. Obviously the presentations are anonymous because we have to guess which one was who’s at the end of all presentations. We also vote each song as a Bop or a Flop and the ones that get the highest votes stay on our class playlist.
Gym Glimpse:
This week, we continued our unit in gym, volleyball! We are focusing on our underhand serves and our forearm passes. The girls’ and the boys’ tryouts are finished and they are having a great start! The Boys’ team just came in 5th in a tournament this week. Congratulations to them.
Science Salute:
In Science, we started a new unit, Matter and States of Matter. This week we focused on Molecules. We learned that even non-moving solid objects like spoons, are actually moving non-stop on the inside. The molecules move constantly, almost like dancing. It was interesting to figure out things we never thought about in our daily lives.
Next Week: Tiam will write the blog!
