#HClassBlog - “We should have Global School Play Day every week!" - February 13, 2024

“We should have  Global School Play Day every week!" Shouted out by many in the class following Wednesday’s GSPD fun.

Introduction

Welcome back to another blog article from Mr. H's class. Hello my name is Cole, I like hockey and video games, especially Fortnite, and I'll be writing the blog this week.

Rose:

Global School Play Day was celebrated this week in Mr. H’s class. It is an annual event where students and teachers are encouraged to play. No screens, no agenda, no rules (other than safety). Following an assembly,  we played cards and board games, including two types of Monopoly (Traditional and Star Wars) . Some of us drew, chatted or played paper volleyball.

Later,  our buddies from JK/SK were able to join us. The Kinder-teachers set up fun stations where we could draw, play with Lego, rice or sand and even practice some hallway bowling.  During the third block we were able to take advantage of the warm weather outside, playing volleyball and football. How good was the weather? It was so warm and beautiful outside it broke records across Ontario.

Thorn

For some students, Friday may have been thorny. Report cards were sent home on Friday. However, for others, this might have been their rose.

Bud:

Ms Shamirian, a teacher candidate from Nippissing University, is coming back to our classroom next week. This will be her second placement from school and she is enjoying both of them with our fantastic class. We are excited to welcome her back.

Math Mentions:

We are learning about discounts & taxes in math class so we can apply them to real life situations. Take a look at an example question below.

History

February is Black History Month.  We are listening to a series of podcast profiles on Black Canadians that was produced by the CBC. Each short podcast features a brief biographical outline of  one black Canadian who did something important. We began with Matthew DaCosta, the first person of colour to arrive in the New World. He was a translator that could speak 5 languages and travelled with Samuel de Champlain.

Each student has chosen another Canadian on the list and will preview the podcast to prepare a brief presentation. Some of us have taken on the challenge of making our own podcast - including me. My partner Krishi and I are researching and creating our own version of a CBC podcast for Willie O’Ree - the Jackie Robinson of Hockey.! Stay tuned.

Student Appreciation Of:

The student that I've decided to pick is Callen. Callen is always in a good mood and brings positive energy to the classroom, as well as a lot of information and ideas. Last week, he wanted to celebrate the Chinese New Year and brought every student a small gift - Smarties and heart erasers inside a red envelope designed with  traditional Chinese patterns. Thanks Callen.

Next week, Brandon will write our blog
