#HClassBlog - “What flavour are your shoes?” - January 16, 2024

 Quote:

“What flavour are your shoes?”  Earlier in the week during a presentation, A.R. and Umar accidentally put the word “flavour” instead of “style” on their shoe survey. We have now decided that shoes have flavour and A.R. asked Mr. Hodgkinson what flavour his shoes were?

Introduction: 

We are back from the break and another week in Mr. Hodgkinson’s class, coming to an end. Hey there! My name is Krishi, and I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I love shopping with peers and taking my dog for adventurous walks.

Rose:

Last week, the highlight was coming back to school on Monday after our extended winter break. It was wonderful to reunite with everyone after two weeks. Another exciting moment was celebrating our classmate Rhianna's and Tyler’s 13th birthdays. We officially have teenagers in our class.


Thorn:

It's a small thorn but, unfortunately, there was an indoor recess on a rainy day … why is it raining in Canada in January??

Bud:

Our class is excited about the PD Day next week on Friday! Looking forward to adding an extra day to our weekend. It's a break from our regular routine, giving us time to recharge and do things we enjoy. We're already chatting about plans and activities for this bonus day off. This break is motivating us to stay focused on our school work throughout the week. Can't wait for Friday!

Literacy Leanings:

Last week, we kicked off a quest to discover our motivational word for the year, our #OneWord. The #OneWord challenge is an idea intended to replace the idea of making New Year's resolutions. We evaluate our goals, dreams, hopes and expectations for 2024 and choose a single word to keep us inspired. My chosen word is "harmonious," which, for me, means creating a calm and positive atmosphere effortlessly, bringing a soothing vibe to every moment.

Math Mentions:

Before the winter break, we kicked off the creation of some awesome race car coding games, and we're pumped to share them with our classmates. There's a wealth of creative ideas and perspectives in our class. One student is diving into a SpongeBob theme, while others are exploring a space, a sky course, and even a Candy Land concept! It's pretty mind-blowing to see just how imaginative and creative our class can be. Colton was one of the first to complete his. You can click here to play his game.


Geography:

In our geography class, we've begun exploring land use and zoning. Mr. Hodgkinson kicked it off with a literacy connection and the song Subdivisions. The lyrics are fantastic and were crafted by the Canadian band Rush. It tells the story of a teenager who feels stuck in his suburban life and wants to escape and live in an exciting downtown world. It was pretty cool to recognize bits of ourselves in that poem!

Now, we're delving into other land use, including commercial, agricultural, industrial, institutional and recreational. Mr. H has been delivering incredibly engaging lessons, using creative songs and poems to keep us focused and interested.


Student Appreciation Of The Week:

Each week, we pick someone in our class to appreciate, and this week it's Hana. We all think Hana is super valuable because she's been plugging in the Chromebooks every day for a long time. But now that we have a new schedule, Hana will finally get a break. Hana, you're truly amazing! Thanks for being such an awesome part of our class!

We would also like to appreciate Umar K and Colton who assembled a Tech Tub that was gifted to our classroom. We did not need it so they donated it to our library. Ms. Ferguson was delighted to receive it as she just ordered one.
