#HClassBlog - “I can’t wait to be old enough to have a mango margarita!” - November 23, 2023

 Quote of the Week:

“I can’t wait to be old enough to have a mango margarita!” - overheard during a lunch room conversation.

Introduction:

Hey Readers! My name’s Callen and I like math, literacy, art and geography. Outside of school I enjoy karate and coding.

The Rose:

This week our rose had to be the sock drop. The sock drop is a fundraiser for people who do not have clothes or socks. The entire school brings in plain white socks and whichever class brings in the most socks wins the Coyote Trophy. Also, at the end of the fundraiser all the students that brought in socks get to throw the socks in baskets and basketball hoops from the stairway.

Callen at the Sock Drop.

Another amazing part of our week was the creation of a fun racing game created by me. The game is called Super Codey Kart. It was very popular in our class and got 51 plays on the first day. You can visit it here.

The Thorn:

We thankfully didn’t have any thorn for our class this week. However it has been very cold as winter is right around the corner.

The Bud:

Next week, we are excited to work on our videos on Absolute Location. To do this we will choose a location in the world that has spatial significance to us or the world (ex. Empire State Building, Great Pyramid of Giza). Then we have to make a video talking about the exact location in longitude and latitude. This however was part two. Check out Geography Gems to see Part 1. Also we are half excited for our Beep Test next week. A Beep Test is a part of our fitness unit where a series of beeps play and you have to get to the other side of the gym before the next beep. It slowly gets faster and faster. Whatever beep we stop at determines our level. At the end of our fitness unit we will try again to try and improve. Us as a class have mixed feelings about this challenge but I am personally not excited.

Literacy Leanings:

This week in Literacy we learned a way to bump up our sentences. We start with a basic sentence. For example “Callen likes to code” We then rewrite it with the object first. “Coding is something Callen enjoys.” We then continue writing it in different ways like verb first, adverb first, and adjective first. We then use what we wrote to make one final sentence or two. We then add some GIFs and Images to make it look stunning then we submit it. Here is mine.

Geography Gems:

For geography, we started learning about Absolute Location, Longitude and Latitude. Longitudes are the lines that go across the earth north and south. They are also called Meridians. Latitudes are the lines that go across the earth east to west. They are also called Parallels. You can match up the lines of longitude and latitude to create an invisible grid across the world. You can find the locations of each point of intersection and mark them as coordinates. As I said in the bud section we have to make a video about the coordinates of a location. This week, we made a framework about all the facts and additions we will add in our videos.

Health Heroics:

Finally, in health, we are learning about online safety and cyberbullying. For example, we wrote a paragraph about how social media affects our day to day lives both positively and negatively. Also we talked about bullying through social media and what to do when you are in an argument with your friends online.

Thanks for reading, parents and students!

Rhianna will soon be back to share our adventures from November 20 - November 25.
