#HClassBlog - "Gee, Oh Golly, That's a knee slapper ... yuck, yuck, yuck" - November 3, 2023

 Quote of the Week:

"Gee, Oh Golly, That's a knee slapper ... yuck, yuck, yuck." Cole sarcastically and humourously responding to a joke he didn't appreciate.

Introduction:

Hi, I am Yara. I like writing, reading, and literacy overall. I also enjoy math, French, and gym. Outside of school, I play piano and soccer.

The Rose:

The Rose for the week had to be our Pumpkin Time Bomb experiments! We brought in pumpkins and measured their height and circumference. Then, we wrapped them in elastic bands until they blew up. We counted how many bands it took and then measured the diameter and thickness of the pumpkin rind. We used this to learn about the relationship between diameter and circumference. Later, we will look at the data on a scatterplot. Here's a GIF capturing one explosive moment!

The Thorn:

Last week, our beloved teacher candidate from Nipissing University, Mrs. Shamirian, bid farewell to our cozy classroom. Although we will miss her, we are eagerly anticipating her return in February for her next placement!

The Bud:

Next week, we have volleyball club starting. I am currently playing on the school basketball team and our season also continues next week. It will also be Remembrance Day. That is a solemn and important event. We will also have our raffle. We earn raffle tickets by completing work and meeting expectations, Mr. Hodgkinson brings in prizes (stickers, pop, chips, chocolate bars and candy) and if we have a winning ticket, we get to pick one from the prize table.

Literacy Leanings:

In our class, we're currently reading the novel Two Degrees. Mr. Hodgkinson left us on a cliff-hanger. One of the characters, Natalie, lives in Miami, Florida. Her family decided to barricade their home against a hurricane rather than leaving -- because it was too expensive. The hurricane (Rueben) made a direct hit on their area and their home was flooded washing Natalie away into the raging storm.

Mr. Hodgkinson introduced us to a helpful resource for improving our spelling and vocabulary - a website called Flippity. Parents, you're welcome to check out this site! To use Flippity, you can create flashcards, quizzes, random name pickers, board games, bingo, timelines, leaderboards, and more for educational purposes.

Math Mentions:

We successfully finished the Gumball Coding Task, where we created a 3-act story, including foreshadowing, using a program called Scratch and characters from the Cartoon Network show, The Amazing World Of Gumball. We learned how to use loops and a procedure to have a character experience a "glitch". Here is my example.

We also learned about the circumference and area of a circle.
