#HClass22 Blog - "They are going to graduate in that washroom line" October 12, 2022

Classroom Quote of the week: Travis “They are going to graduate in the that washroom line” (A comment made because of the long lines to use the washroom during nutrition breaks)

Introduction ~

Hello my icy energizers. I’m Mohammed. This week I will be making our third blog! My favorite sport is basketball and I love math. My favorite show is One Piece, I’m double jointed and I play the tuba.

The Rose ~

This week, I think the rose had to be a free day off for Thanksgiving and a short week. Who doesn't enjoy a short week and free day off.

The Thorn ~

I think the thorn this week was that we had a rough time settling down because of the three day weekend. We all admitted that the noise levels we were at were just unacceptable. It's fine though because we managed to realize what we were doing was wrong and settle down. Mr. Hodgkinson said he was proud that we recognized this and that we made the changes on our own.

The Bud ~

This week, we found out who made the competitive volleyball teams and, for those who didn’t, we get to play in the interschool league. It was tough for people who didn't make the team, but the coaches were really proud of us for taking a risk and they told us that it was an important learning experience. Disappointment is part of life.

Mathematical Mentions ~

This week in math we covered multiples and lowest common multiples (LCM). For example, if Samantha visits the library 3 days and Jonathan visits the library every 7 days and they met at the library today, how many days until they meet again. Sure, you can use a calendar and count the days, but the LCM will get you there faster.

Literacy Leanings ~

We started reading this year's middle school novel. It is a book called Thirst and it is the story of Minni who grows up in the Dharavi slums in Mumbai. Minni and her family struggle every day to get clean water. Then Minni finds out some dangerous people are stealing the water at night...what will she do?

The Global Read Aloud is an annual celebration of books. We  connected with two classes - one in Quesnel, British Columbia and the other in Waterloo, Ontario. They are also reading the book. We shared video messages with them through a program called Flip and then used an online bulletin board (Padlet) to share our predictions. This week, we have been reading each other's paragraphs about the first seven chapters.

Geography ~

Our geography studies began. First, we looked at things a geographer does by looking at the Kayapo people of the Amazon. Then, we started learning about relative and absolute location. This began with our first look at the Compass Rose. We used the mnemonic Never Eat Soggy Waffles to remember the Cardinal Directions (North, East, South & West). We also learned the Inter-Cardinal Directions. Did you know there is actually a 32 point Compass Rose -- but that is for professional geographers.
