Introduction

Hello, my name’s Eric and I am writing a blog this week and also last week! My favorite subjects are gym and math. I love playing football and hanging out with my friends. We did a lot of amazing things during the last two weeks.

The Rose

We are getting started working on “Genius Hour” or “Passion Project”. We are given six hours of class time over three weeks to work on anything that we are passionate about or that we've always wanted to learn about. At the end, we must have something to share from our efforts! Some students are painting, others are learning to crotchet. I am coding a football game using a program called Scratch and another student is making interactive webpages about the greatest superheroes and villains. There are a lot of great ideas that we are making and I’m excited to see how they turn out!

We were also learning about rapping from the famous rapper Nas! Well, not in person, he has a Masterclass on Hip Hop and Digital Storytelling and Mr. Hodgkinson screened sections of it for us.

We learned a lot about internal rhymes, end rhymes, imperfect rhymes, and a lot more. Now we can get started on making a rap song. We can either tell our own story or, write about a person we've learned about in Canadian history. Some students are excited to present theirs to the class and other students would rather deconstruct hip-hop songs to determine the meanings, figurative language and rhymes. See the example below from the hip-hop musical Hamilton.

Notice the internal and end rhymes,
some are perfect and some are imperfect

After a long time, we have finally finished watching the show “Freaks and Geeks”! We watched an episode a week since October. It was hilarious watching a show set in 1980 and connecting it to so many things that are in our Health curriculum. I wish there was more of “Freaks and Geeks” but there was only season 1 so we can’t watch it anymore.

The Thorn

I wouldn’t really say there was a thorn this week. This week was just fun and awesome.

The Bud

Next week is March Break! A lot of people have exciting plans for March Break and not only that, but we can also take our masks off if we want to! We can get rid of these annoying masks and finally have some fresh air!

Mathematical Mentions

We have started learning about converting an amount into a percentage! We can now convert any amount of a total number into a percentage. Not only that, but we also learned how to convert a fraction to a decimal and also decimal to a percentage. We are now experts at converting stuff! Mr. Hodgkinson says that we will be using this knowledge to learn about tax and interest in a Financial Literacy unit after the break.

Literacy Links

We have been watching CNN10 videos and making a summary of the news and current events we are learning. Obviously, the biggest story has been about Russia invading Ukraine. The host is Carl Azuz and he gave one of our students, AQ, a shout out when Mr. Hodgkinson posted his response to the war on Twitter.

We also learned about headlines and hashtags.

Yes, this is Mr. Hodgkinson’s paper, but mine isn’t online so I had to use his as an example. Anyway, as you can see at the top, we have made some hashtags about the headlines and wrote 2 or 3 lines about that headline. But wait there’s more! We as a class made a tweet on Twitter saying…..

History

After waiting for about 2 weeks, which felt like a decade, we have finally tested our cardboard-made snowshoes! We originally made these snowshoes when we were learning about the fur trade and Coureur de Bois which means Runners of the Woods, and it took about a week to build our snowshoes. After we tested them, we raced to see if our snowshoes worked or not! Unfortunately, I wasn’t there so I didn’t see the result but all I know is my classmates had a lot of fun.

And that is it for this week’s blog! Thanks for reading and have a wonderful March Break!
