Introduction ~

Hello! My name is Nathan and I will be writing the class blog for this week. I enjoy watching baseball with my family. My favorite team is the Toronto Blue Jays. I like playing guitar and I enjoy gaming with my friends. (mostly playing Minecraft.) My favorite TV show is Stranger Things. Now, I’ll stop wasting your time. A lot of entertaining stuff happened this week, so stay tuned to find out!

The Rose ~

I think the rose for this week was that Halloween was on October 31st. (Monday.) We did numerous Halloween activities. Some students were dressed in costumes. We watched a Halloween-themed Freaks and Geeks episode and discussed it in Health. We listened to Halloween music and generally took it easy for a day.

The Thorn ~

Unfortunately, there were multiple thorns recently. The first thorn was definitely the strike and that we missed two school days. The second thorn is how noisy and loud we were during work periods and even during class. We’ve gotten a lot better since the start of the year when class time was unbearably loud – I am blaming it on the Halloween candy.

The Bud ~

We get our Report Cards on Friday and we are looking forward to those. We have already conferenced with Mr. Hodgkinson, so there are no surprises -- we know exactly how well we are doing. (Spoiler-we're killin' it!)

Mathematical Mentions ~

Math was quite entertaining last week. There was definitely some math involved in our coding projects, but we were also using code to tell stories – so it was also a literacy assignment.

We’ve been learning about important parts of a circle and how to determine circumference if we have the radius or diameter.

Additionally, we continued our work converting fractions to decimals and percentages in order to analyze statistics. Since it is volleyball season, we looked at the serving statistics of players on the school team.

Literacy Leanings ~

We used code to tell stories. We have been discussing the “story arc” and the idea of “conflict” and how it makes a narrative work. In this case, the “conflict” was that our main character was “glitching”. Our coding allowed us to present a short, silly story with a beginning that foreshadowed a conflict, a middle that included the conflict and an end that resolved it. Click here to see an example of a coded Gumball story from Mariam. (Just click the green flag to start it)

Science Sessions ~

In science, we were talking about ecosystems and the environment. We talked about components and how multiple items/objects are required to make something work. For example, consider a home theatre system and all the components, from the television to the amplifier to the speakers (and more) . You can’t listen to music or watch TV in surround sound without all the components working together! The same is true of our ecosystem. Here is a diagram showing it.

Health/Art

The latest episode of Freaks & Geeks included students vandalizing property. We learned about the history of vandalism and the difference between it and artistic graffiti. Then, we started some graffiti art.

This was only a practice effort from a student

Thanks for reading…next week Satayish will be writing!
