#HClass22 Blog - "My toes are cracking" - September 28, 2022

 Classroom Quote of the week:

"My toes are cracking” said Yara when her toes randomly cracked.

Quote/Theme for the week

This week Mr. Hodgkinson noticed that many of us are apologizing when he gives us feedback. He said that he is like a coach and a lot of coaches work with athletes who are much better at a sport than they are. Still, the coach gives them feedback and the athletes don't apologize, they learn from it to get better. In conclusion, we learned that we should not feel bad about the improvements he tells us to make. It's not what we did wrong...it's what we do next.

Introduction ~

Hi, I am Anviksha, I love writing and I’m proud to present to you the first blog written by a student. I am the youngest person in our class, and my favourite subjects are math, science, history and literacy.

The Rose ~

This week the “London Ice Cream Company” graciously gave everyone at our school a free scoop of smooth, creamy and delicious French vanilla ice cream! We all loved this considerate treat and appreciated it very much.

The Thorn ~

The thorn from last week would have to be the weather, unlike the past two weeks. Last week was cold, gloomy and rainy, but we didn’t let that stop us, we still got to the park on the last day.

The Bud ~

The class was extremely excited to meet the new student who has joined us this Monday. We are also excited for cross country, with a lot of the class participating. Our first intraschool event is this Wednesday and the Regionals are next week.

Mathematical Mentions ~

This week we worked in groups on a project connected to real life. A coach has three runners and they have each participated in seven 100 meter races. The coach has the times (data) from all the races and has to evaluate it in order to decide which runner to take to the Championship Race -- only one runner can go.
Here was the challenge – there was a way to use the data to justify any of the choices. We had to prove why we picked the one we did using our understanding of mean, median, mode and range. Here's a screen shots from the work my group did. You can see our whole presentation here.
This week, we are going to act out the results in a dramatic performance -- one of us will be the coach breaking the news to the three runners...will they accept success or defeat graciously...or will there be fireworks?!  Pics to follow.

Literacy Leanings ~

This week in literacy we completed our first Shapegram. We used Google Draw to make Ice Cream treats and then wrote descriptive paragraphs to describe our frozen creations and our favourite desserts. Here is a picture of mine and you can click this link to see our class work here.

Geography & History - Amazing Canadian Women

We started an introduction to Geography, with students collaborating in groups while discussing what they know, want to know and think about Geography. In grades 1 - 6 we do Social Studies and in Grade 7 & 8 we do Geography and History.

We also used Google Slides to create a one minute "video" on an amazing Canadian woman we researched.
These videos will soon be posted on our announcements in October for Women’s History Month. We will share all the videos through Mr. Hodgkinson's Twitter account for 19 school days in October.
My partner and I did a video on poet Rupi Kaur. You can click this link to see it. Click in the top left to start the music and then click on the screen to play the short video.

Thanks for reading…next week, Sameed will be writing our blog.
