Jiya Blog - April 10
Introduction ~
Hi, my name is Jiya, and I’m writing this week’s blog. My preferred subjects are science and math. I enjoy spending time with friends & learning new dances!
The Rose ~
This week, we started working on Lightning Talks for an upcoming Mystery Unit. I'm looking forward to this because Mr. H has said that we will be digging deep into critical thinking. In order to prepare, we have to make a short, fast, informative presentation about different topics. As we speak, we will present an engaging slideshow with limited text and high impact graphics. The topic that has been assigned to me is Red Herring. (I've included a Giphy that I made that summarizes this literary device as a Six Word Story.
We all took a questionnaire a few weeks ago and got our results as True Colours – Blue, Gold, Green and Orange. Each colour represents our personalities, both positive and negative. My outcome was both Blue and Gold. I fully agree with my results.
We are currently writing humorous sketches to showcase in front of the class. The characters in each sketch will be exaggerated versions of the True Colours. Our groups is setting our performance in a classroom environment – I’ll be playing an amplified version of a Blue – super kind and sensitive, but also a little too emotional. I'm looking forward to seeing all of our classmates' skits.

The Thorn ~
This week's thorn was that we needed to address attentive listening in our classroom. We had a class meeting and reviewed the expectations during lessons and when Mr. Hodgkinson is making important announcements. I say it was the thorn, but we also dealt with things really maturely. We came to the conclusion that Mr. H will teach, and it is your responsibility to listen and learn. If you chose not to, then do not distract the learning of others. Personally, I agree, since it is each individual’s responsibility to listen and pay attention.
The Bud ~
The weather is clearing up these days, and we're getting closer to summer! We are now allowed to play wind instruments in music class. Everyone in our class received their band instruments. (I have a trumpet and I am excited to learn how to play it)
Mathematical Mentions ~
We studied angles and polygons this week. We also reviewed how to use a protractor to measure angles. We learned about three angle rules - supplementary angles, complementary angles and opposite angles. Not only that, but we had practiced angles all week in preparation for a particularly difficult challenge on Friday. (optional) On Tuesday, we will have a brief quiz to show off our knowledge!
Literacy Links ~
Mr. Hodgkinson managed to visit each of us this week so that we could read with him. We then completed a quick, online quiz to check our ability to identify the meaning of words “in context” and to see how well we could identify inferences made by the author. We’ll take it up next week.
That concludes this week's blog! Thank you for reading! :]
