Own Work Bro - February 16
Introduction
"Own work Bro" - AQ to a classmate
Introduction
Hi my name is Naimat and Mr.Hodgkinson has asked me to write the blog for this week. It is my fourth year at Sir Arthur Currie. My favourite subject is science and I like to paint in my spare time.
The Rose
There wasn’t that much snow this week which is a good thing because for gym we got to go outside and had a long walk in the forest we put some food for the birds.
And another great thing happened. Intramural badminton and Dance Club started! Both take place during Nutrition Breaks. Many of the students in the class joined one, or both. I didn't because I don't have any interest in those things. Still, people were excited.

We had to write a French test. I know that tests are important to check in to see where we are, but a lot of us find them stressful. Hopefully everyone did okay on it. I got a pretty good 75%. I'm happy with that.
Mathematical Mentions
For math we have been learning about ratios. We watched a video called “Atlantean Dodgeball”. In the video, one coach kept comparing the difference between the teams and not the ratio. We have also learned how to connect part to part and part to whole relationships to Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages.
Coding Connections
This week we continued to build our coding skills by learning how to create a fun game called “Rocket Blaster”. This is my example. We were all impressed with Henry's remix. Mr. Hodgkinson says that Henry should be teaching him coding.
Literacy Links
For literacy we tried “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions”. These are based on the work of Al Jafee. He is a great American cartoonist and humorist who used to work for MAD Magazine. In March he’s going to turn 101! Years old. Here is a picture of one of his comics with my Snappy Answer at the bottom. It was fun to try and use our sense of humor to create something funny. The whole class set it here.
We also tried a Sentence Structure Challenge. We took a simple sentence, such as “I like brownies' ' and tried to rephrase it using different starting words - Object first, Verb first, Adjective first and Adverb first. Finally, we use the ideas we have created to craft a single, powerful and engaging sentence with strong vocabulary. Here is my example, but the whole class activity can be found here.
We have also focused on Black History Month by looking at important events in the lives of Black Canadians. We have been listening daily to short historical podcasts through CBC Radio. You can hear them here. We are learning how to “sketchnote” to record what we learn. Sketchnoting is a way of using words, arrows and pictures to record the most important information from a presentation. Below is what we have created so far as a class. Now we get a copy for ourselves and get to add more after each podcast.
The Bud
We are going to start having Math Games Monday every week. We have learned a number of card, dice and paper games that will help us build our skills in mathematics. Every Monday we will play games with different students to build our thinking, computational and problem solving skills.
And I'm excited to see everyone's Holiday or Holiday presentations throughout the months of February and March. I'm going to be presenting mine on March 11th.
So this was this week’s blog. Stay tuned for the next one.:)
