Introduction

Hi we are Sydney and Natalie. We’re good friends who love hanging out with our friends. Natalie really likes gymnastics and Sydney likes drawing and teaching her dog new tricks.

The Rose

It was Family Day last week. We like school, but you can’t beat a long weekend. It was also Carnivale. It is the first time in nearly two years that we have been able to do something as a school. It felt so good to be outside with everyone from Grade 4 - 8. The Grade 8s ran each station and the Grade 7s were team captains to help out the students in the Junior Grades. We were Team 8 - check out the sign we made.

The Thorn

The cold weather continued…especially on Wednesday. We are hopeful that spring is coming soon.

The Bud

Next week is a short one. We get school off on Friday. Mr. Hodgkinson says he has to learn with other teachers…but that seems a lot easier than teaching all day.

Mathematical Mentions

We have combined our Math and Art together this week. We were each assigned a piece of a mural on cardstock. Each has geometric sections on it. We were required to find out the area of each shape and what percentage of the entire shape it takes up.  Here is an example.

When we were done, we covered it in tints and shades of red. A tint is created when you add white plasticine to red and a shade is made when you add black. We also left one area white. It isn’t quite finished, but here is how it looks so far.

Literacy Links

We are still reading Front Desk. It is an excellent book with lots of twists and turns and plenty of things to discuss. We are each working through a Reading Assessment task to see how well we can Determine the Main Idea, Understanding New Vocabulary in Context and Recall Facts. We also learned about Six Word Stories and wrote about our Family Day Weekend. The class set isn't quite done, but this is Natalie’s example.

History

We have also focused on Black History Month by looking at important events in the lives of Black Canadians. We have been listening daily to short historical podcasts through CBC Radio. We are also learning about the fur trade and the Coureur du Bois (the Runners of the Woods). We are designing and building our own snow shoes and we're testing them in a relay race challenge this week.
