I Thought You Said "Dhar Man" - Sulaiman Blog - November 29
This week’s blogger is Sulaiman. His favourite subject is science, he plays guitar and he likes coding.
Introduction
This week was COLD. Probably the coldest of the year so far. But Mr. Hodgkinson let students stay inside if they wanted...and that’s the story of how I got no Vitamin D whatsoever this week!
Classroom Quote of the Week
Mr. Hodgkinson: Today’s Bop or Flop from the 70s is Starman by David Bowie.
Jason: I thought you just said Dhar Mann!
The Rose
My rose this week were all the card games we played. We learned how to play Hearts and Gin Rummy and it was super fun. Me and my group really enjoyed playing Hearts (we were too into Hearts to even start a game of Gin Rummy) and we stayed inside every single recess to play.
The Thorn
I think the thorn this week was the bad weather. As I said in the introduction, this was probably the coldest week so far. I was too busy playing card games, so I didn’t get the full scope of how cold it was, but based on my classmates' descriptions, it was pretty cold.
The Bud
My bud this week was the scatter plots. Scatter plots are like graphs but instead of lines, they are just dots. Anyway, we used the scatter plots to compare everyone's physical measurements. Some of the things we measured were, Height, arm span, and cranial circumference. We plotted the measurements on the different scatter plots, and then compared the different plots. We did this to see if there was any correlation between any plots. It was cool to see the finished slideshow of all the different comparisons. We also used how to create the scatter plots with Google Sheets.
Literacy & Science
This week in literacy, we did dolphin Shapegrams! They were really fun to make, and there were a lot of unique and interesting ones. Making the dolphins was by far the hardest Shapegram we’ve done. In the Shapegrams slide, we also each gave 5 or more facts about an ocean animal of our choice. I surfed through the slideshow and found a lot of interesting information about various sea creatures. You can see the whole class set here.
Geography
This week in Geography we learned about coordinates (absolute location). We went over the latitude and longitude of a location. I won’t bore you with the details, but we learned that you can locate any place on earth within 30 feet using parallels and meridians. It’s cool (and scary) that any country can just send a nuclear missile to within 30 feet of me and instantly incinerate me...if they have my coordinates.
Thanks for reading. A new guest blogger will be here next week.
