Classroom Quote of the week “You aren’t just a Karen, you’re a volleyball Karen… A Varen!” (Desi)

Introduction
I am excited to re-lauch the #HClass classroom blog...with a brand new set of students. It’s been a chaotic start to the year, but we think we are getting our feet under us now. This week, we wrote the post as a class. In future weeks, a different student will take on the challenge of being a guest blogger.

We’ve organized our post into sections, starting with The Rose (the best event of the week), The Thorn (something not so great from the week) and The Bud (what we are looking forward to in the upcoming week.)
The Rose
We made pop bottle terrariums as part of our science unit on ecosystems. We recently learned about the six components of an ecosystem (sunlight, air, soil, water, plant life & animal life).
Our pop bottle terrariums are designed to keep a feeder fish alive in the bottom and they self-water a succulent plant in the soil at the top. See our pictures here
The Thorn
The weather finally turned cold. It should be expected -- it is mid-November in Canada. Still, it made recess periods a little less pleasant.
The Bud
Next week we will be tackling the challenging Dolphin Shapegrams. We will also be researching marine life from the ocean biomes. Get ready for plenty of “fintastic” dolphin facts. Last week, we completed mini-research projects on our favourite endangered animals and their biomes. We did these using the Lion Shapegram. See all of our work here. Check out the Shapegram remixes below.

Math Mentions
We took on the challenges of circles this week. We are able to find the area and the circumference of a circle given either the radius or the diameter. Here’s a challenge for you. What is the area of the green shaded region of this object? Answer next week.
Literacy
We continued reading The Barren Grounds by David Robertson. It is a fascinating story about two Metis foster children who discover a secret world full of anamorphic creatures including a talking/walking squirrel and fisher.
We have also been exploring similes through our favourite music. We’ve shared them through coded presentations in Scratch. Here is an example.

Geography
This week our focus was on population distribution and land usage in Canada. We learned about rural, urban and suburban living. Interestingly, 89% of our class would rather live in a fancy apartment in a major city than in either a beautiful rural farmhouse or well-appointed subdivision home.

Thanks for reading. Next week, Sulaiman will be our guest blogger.
