New Order - Blue Monday - because it was Blue Monday on January 18. What is Blue Monday? Blue Monday is considered to be the saddest day of the year, due to a combination of bad weather and long nights. It always happens on the third Monday in January. The excitement of Winter Break is over. The weather is cold and shivery and the long nights and short days are getting to people. Did you know that the sun provides us with Vitamin D? We get a lot less of the sun, and vitamin D, in the winter and that can impact our moods. So, get outside whenever you can.
The Best Thing About This Week (The Rose): Last week, we got to bake cookies online with the whole class. Mr. Hodgkinson shared a recipe and we all went through it, step-by-step. They were the best cookies ever!!
The Worst Thing About This Week (The Thorn):
Sadly, more virtual learning until at least February 11th...and maybe longer. This stinks, but we are trying to stay positive and looking at the bright side of the situation. We’re safe, mask-free and we do get to sleep in a bit more.
Mathematics Mentions:
Last week,we learned (fractions, common denominators, lowest terms, adding and subtracting - concretely, representationally or abstractly.
When we were baking, we talked about metric conversion from the Imperial system (which the US uses). To convert Farenheit to Celsius really quickly, you can subtract 30 and divide it by two. It isn’t perfect, but it is close.
Literacy Links:
We finished “Fatty Legs” . Fatty legs was a great book about Olemaun, an 8 year old Inuvialuit girl who wants to learn to read. She bugs her father to go to the school on the mainland, far away from their Arctic island home. She soon realizes that this may have been a mistake.
Science:
In science, we continued our look at heat. We learned a lot about Molecules. Did you know that word comes from the Latin Moles & Cules or “Little Lumps”? Baking cookies helped. We could see how heat affects the molecules in a solid when the cookies went from solid balls of dough, to liquidy cookies and then back to soft, delicious cookies.
We’ve also been watching Eureka videos (from the 70s). They are a bit cheesy - but educational. Mr. Hodgkinson said that he watched them when he was in grade 7. Because we are online, we have been answering questions to show our understanding using the program EdPuzzle.
History:
Our focus in history has come from our read aloud. We are looking at New France and the relationships that happened between the European settlers and Canada’s First Nations and Inuit people. We are doing some project based learning on a topic that interests us. We are then going to make an informative pamphlet (or brochure) that we can share with classmates.
What are we looking forward to? (The Bud):
This week I am looking forward to some of the drama activities. We did a survey on Friday and the top three things we asked for this week were
The motivational quote this week actually came from me
My quote means that you shouldn't let others tell you how to live your own life.
